Barbara Jane Banks
I have always loved drawing and painting animals, my earliest recollection was painting a squirrel when I was about 7. I trained as an art teacher and biology teacher two great interests in my life and worked in the UK and the Algarve as a teacher of both children and adults. I have been painting animals for over 40 years and never tire of the challenge of capturing the animal’s character and poise through painting their portrait. I have met some wonderful dogs, horses and cats and enjoy hearing from their owner about fond experiences with their pet who is one of their family. I usually paint in Acrylics or soft pastels, both suitable mediums for giving realistic textures and the softness of an animal’s coat.

This little Champagne Poodle was in her latter years but looked so fluffy and bright after her shampoo and brushing. Her portrait is now a fitting tribute to a faithful friend.

" Eucalyptus at Sta Barbara de Nexe "
Morning light and a soft breeze brought this tree to life across the field from my house. I just had to paint its quivering leaves and graceful branches as it almost seemed to dance in the sunshine.

"Looking Up"
At Quinta do Lago there are some beautiful palm trees of many varieties. Looking up I was fascinated by the overlapping shapes and vibrant colours that this one provided.

"Looking Down"
Here as I was looking down, I could see the base of a palm and the undergrowth that grew so vigorously around it. Dark, cool shadows give welcome rest from the bright, hot sunlight.
